Peggy Kain has worked for conglomerates and entrepreneurs, in public relations departments and office management, on the East Coast as well as the West. She has most often found her own jobs -- regularly scanning local classifieds to satisfy her own curiosity as much as to discover new prospects.
In fact, Peggy’s life has always been one of curious exploration – whether traveling the country, meeting new people, learning a new profession or taking on the next position. Perhaps this is the key to her charmingly quick wit and candid wisdom.
Second-ever placement. First-rate position. BennettFrost had barely opened its doors years ago when Peggy, who was relocating to the area, walked through them in response to an ad. A thorough screening and two interviews later, she became the second-ever placement for BennettFrost in a position with State Center Community College District.
“It was a perfect match,” she says, “and I enjoyed working with the enterprising director of the Economic Development Network who was my supervisor.” This was one of those handful of experiences that are truly wonderful, Peggy says. Wonderful enough to keep her there for nine years.
Confidence inspires confidence. It was with apprehension that Peggy had initially approached BennettFrost. “I never got any follow through previously with agencies,” she says. “But at BennettFrost, they give you a confidence that they are really interested. I’ve asked them very direct questions, and they’ve always been very open and honest.”
Soon she was on the hiring side, coming back to source temps during her lengthy tenure at the District.
Back to fill a gap. More than a decade later, Peggy returned as a candidate. She had found herself in limbo while awaiting confirmation on a government job, so she decided to take some temp jobs during the delay. “I’m not the type to sit at home and do craftsy things or crossword puzzles,” she says. From media outlets to homebuilders, Peggy jumped right in to fill the needs.
In her first few weeks, she had earned Temp of the Month. Willing to try anything, whether a new challenge or a routine task, she quickly caught the eye of employers. A homebuilder that at first sought part-time help with phones soon saw her as someone rich in life experience who could elegantly handle sales in a new development.
Granville’s gain. The position with Granville Homes started at a few weeks and extended to a few months, then materialized into a permanent spot. They had the chance to see her work, and she had the coveted chance to check them out. This was a good opportunity, she says. And because it turned out there was no opening in Fresno for the government job she had hoped for, Uncle Sam’s loss became Granville’s gain.
“In this field of work there is a lot to learn,” she said. “Temping is fun, but I like to get my teeth into things.” So much so that she has already earned a real estate license as well.
To the person wishing to re-enter the workforce, Peggy points out that temping is also a good way to get started and find out what’s going on in the world. “You need an agent, and BennettFrost is a good agent.”
